Arguably one of the most memorable movies of the 1980s was “The Karate Kid” (1984) starring Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita, and over 30 years later in 2018 a spin-off called “Cobra Kai” starring former high school bully Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) burst onto the scene on Youtube. It garnered rave reviews from both young and older audiences, and eventually after 2 seasons was picked up last summer by Netflix for Season 3.

If you haven’t had a chance to check out Cobra Kai, 2021 is definitely a good time to start. With much of the nation still under lockdown from Covid-19, millions have spent the last 10 months binge watching their TVs, and Cobra Kai is definitely a series worth considering. If you aren’t already familiar with the series because you’ve been living under a rock, here is the Series 1 trailer that will get you fired up!

The series centers around the protagonist Johnny Lawrence (member of Cobra Kai) decades later as he tries to piece together his life. He eventually decides to set up a karate dojo and begins teaching some outcast teenagers who are struggling with their own life issues. Of course what Karate Kid spin-off would be complete without Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) who now runs successful car dealerships and the two stars stories collide to give us the plot of Cobra Kai.

It’s no coincidence that during such a difficult year the world has experienced and with the slow of production of TV/Film in Hollywood, that many are revisiting the classics to keep their minds busy. Cobra Kai is definitely a great binge watch if you are so inclined to do so. If you were a fan of the original Karate Kid movie, you will definitely find the Cobra Kai series to be an interesting spin-off that will bring back that 80s nostalgia.
